Design Workshop : VISUAL SYNTHESIS METHOD IN DESIGNING INTERIOR OBJECT

At each moment in time, we perceive small fragment of our environment through our retinas, yet our subjective perception of the visual environment around us is rather clear, coherent and complete. Often we see things that are not even there; this is because what we perceive is actually a virtual visual environment that is created in our mind – a product of the interaction between our experience, prior knowledge and the incoming sensory data (Lee, 2003).  It is well known that people can imagine combining parts of objects to make a whole figure / synthesized form (Finke & Slayton, 1988). The question is :

“can people ever make genuine visual “discoveries” within this method ?”

In this workshop, Students are asked to make functional 3D interior object design by following these criteria :

  1. Interior object : small furniture, small storage, divider, table lamp, standing lamp, small table, planters and other functional accessories
  2. Made from single sheet of plywood (2D to 3D)
  3. Using visual synthesis method

For this experiment, Students are asked to generate a 3D interior object by mentally constructing selected basic shapes. Following these steps :

  1. Choose maximum 3 basic shapes
  2. Close their eyes and try to constructing the object in their mind
  3. Draw all the objects on the paper and give name beside it
  4. Make the 3D study model
